President, participants:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My name is Johann Roppen. I’m rektor by the Volda University college, one of the three academic institutions cooperating in order to make this conference to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volda University college<\/a> is the oldest of the three institutions, established in 1861 as a teachers training college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two other institutions are Molde University College<\/a> and the \u00c5lesund department of Norwegian University for Science and Technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first time the three of us are joining forces and supporting an international conference, and I hope it’s not the last time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All in all the three institutions in total has more than 11.000 students and some 200 doctoral students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The professors of theology are to be found at the Volda university college, while technology is an important subject in \u00c5lesund as well as in Molde. And I’m happy to see several colleagues from the region participating at the conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When professor Knut-Willy S\u00e6ther<\/a> by the Volda University College first presented the idea of bringing the ESSSAT<\/a>-conference to our region, it sounded like a wild idea. Just look at the sites for previous conferences<\/a>: Big cities in Europe, mostly: Madrid, Lyon, \u0141\u00f3d\u017a, Warsaw, Assisi, Tartu. Edinburgh, Barcelona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then come to think about it: Several of the ESSAT-cities have excellent football teams. But so do we: Three teams in the top division is more than any other region of Norway, including the capital Oslo. And one of the teams have played in the Champions league, playing Real Madrid, Porto and Olympiakos. So maybe it’s possible? If we do this as a team? <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

So professor Knut-Willy S\u00e6ther was able to convince us, we convinced ourselves, we were able to join forces  as well as sponsors to support the conference, and well – here we are!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank You also very much to the main sponsor – Sparebanken M\u00f8re<\/a> – the largest savings bank in the region, as well as the Norwegian Research Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aims and scope of ESSSAT and the conference really is impressing. It’s not a small ambition to bring together people and ideas from science and theology – and everything in between, I understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And with a wonderful purpose: «To reach a better understanding of the interaction between two of the most powerful human pursuits, religion and science».<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, with a war raging in Europe, we quite possibly need more theology and less technology, but surely more understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally I must say I do hope you all get the opportunity to visit the mountains and the fjords – this part of the world is croweded with world class tourist destination, as the gigantic cruise-liners by the pier here in \u00c5lesund demonstrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I can assure you that that the fjords of Norway<\/a> are really shining when the are experienced at a slow pace, by a smaller boat, a canoo or by biking or hiking during summer. Or winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So please enjoy the conference, the ideas being shared and discussed, but also enjoy our small town and big region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
